Monthly Archives: January 2012

I know what you’re thinking, by now you’ve studied the timetable and finally mapped out your entire day at the festival so there’s no point listening to anything new now. Well if your schedule doesn’t include Active Child then you’d better not watch this video because it’s gonna fuck your plans right up. Hanging On is a thing of immense beauty. It also proves Joanna Newsom no longer has exclusive dibs on the harp. Back to the drawing board.

Clashes are inevitable at any festival, it is simply the nature of the beast and perhaps the toughest choice on this years schedule comes at the end of the night when synthgaze maestro’s M83 are pitted in direct competition to vowel-phobic man in the mask SBTRKT. Among some critics’ albums of the year Aaron Jerome’s dubby RnB featuring a variety of guest vocalists is enough to induce a serious headache come 9.20pm when you’re trying to drag your friends away from Anthony Gonzalez and co. Then again maybe you’ll all be at Washed Out…

Note: You’ll be glad to know she’s feeling much better now.

Despite having possibly the most Emo name of any band in the history of the universe TPOBPAH (even the acronym is a fucking mouthful) are more than worth their substantial weight in festival bill space. Hailing from Brooklyn – someone should start checking some credentials – these guys churn out crack-infused guitar gems more efficiently than Avon and Stringer in series 1.

Note: 1 guitar was harmed in the filming of this video.

Today’s featured Laneway artist is Torontonian electro act Austra whose brooding synths and airy female vocal recall Ladytron, in a very good way. This’ll be a more than respectable alternative to watching southern poppers Givers or Neil Finn and the Mrs in their PJ’s.

Note: This video contains traces of nuts people.

The second instalment of Cramming for Laneway presents Brooklyn via Boulder duo Chairlift. Thus far their greatest claim to fame is having their song ‘Bruises’ reach the pinnacle of advertising by starring in an ipod commercial but with a new album launching as we e-speak that includes this (highly unforgettable despite it’s title) little number my curiosity has been roused.

Note: Curiosity may have killed the cat, but the cat-suit is alive and purring. Sorry.

With less than a month until St Jerome brings his Laneway cast to my local city it’s time to get an idea of just how many Sophie’s Choices I’m going to have to make on the big day. We all know there’s nothing more frustrating than “discovering” a band in the days or weeks after said band has played a gig in your hood, especially in Australia where (unless you enjoy Kasabian who just wont go away, please lord make them go away) the touring frequency of international acts often stretches to years. So in order to minimise the likelihood of missing your next “new favourite band” the coming weeks of this blog will be dedicated (probably, maybe) to the Laneway artists of 2012.

First up it’s Geoffrey O’Connor, frontman of local act The Crayon Fields. I fell in love with this song as recently as yesterday and he’s gone straight onto the “must see” list in my iphone notes.

Note: Fans of G&T, gold fish in confined spaces, murder, Farmers Union Iced Coffee and the colour pinky-purple may also enjoy this video.

If you weren’t completely sold by Grimes when I posted “Vanessa” a lil while back then surely this cut from her forthcoming LP Visions will bring you to your senses and make you feel a right knob for not succumbing to her hypnotic charms earlier.
